Her Style Was Sassy ~ an eP post

Hello again! It's been a while since I blocked out some time to play in my 5" x 8" Strathmore Mixed Media journal so that became my priority today when creating my eclectic Paperie weekly post. This journal is getting so thick but there are still lots of pages so as long as the spiral binding holds, I will keep going in it. Today I knew that I wanted to play with another of Julie Nutting's mixed media doll stamps, with a Wendy Vecchi sentiment, and with my favourite colour palette.

I started with a gessoed spread and scribbled Neocolor II watercolour crayon across both pages using a waterbrush to spread the colour.

Next I added Wild Honey Distress ink mainly on the yellow sections through the TCW Honeycomb stencil and Salty Ocean Distress ink mainly on the blue areas through the TCW Confetti stencil. Some overlap was done to tie the sections together.

A Lost Coast Designs border stamp was inked with Jet Black Archival ink and stamped on both pages in three places, rolling the design so that the impressions were imperfect. Black Micron pen was used to line the left side of a few of the honeycombs and they were shaded with Prismacolor pencil. White gel pen was used to colour in some of the circles in the stamped impressions.

Black and white striped washi tape was added to each page, as the platform to anchor the doll and as pointed tabs at the top of the other page. Extra circles were punched and split to add to the top of the platform. A TH bingo strip stamp was inked with Versamark, stamped twice on black cardstock, and coated with clear embossing powder before being heat set. The one image was left intact and adhered to the left page.

The other was cut apart so that three of the squares could be stacked horizontally on the right.A rusted metal heart was popped up on a large foam dot and adhered under the washi tabs. A chipboard bracket was painted with Black Soot Distress Stain, doodled with white gel pen and glued close to the heart.

The senitment comes from Studio 490's A form of Art set. It was inked with Versamark, stamped on patterned paper from Fancy Pants ParkBench stack, and embossed with black powder. It was fussy cut and mounted on an embossed piece of black cardstock which had been highlighted with Treasure Copper applied with my finger. A length of cheesecloth was hand gathered onto doublestick tape on the back before the whole piece was adhered to the journal page. A punched scallop border, a Dymo label saying Sassy, and a bunch of doodling finished the pages before Black Big Brush pen was messily run along the outside edges.

All that was left now was to gussy up (do people still say that??) the star of the show, Doll With Ruffled Dress. or Dolly as she likes to be called. I stamped Dolly once on white cardstock and again just to capture her head. Her dress was stamped once on the floral patterned paper from the ParkBench stack. This gave me the bodice and underskirt which I shaded with Prismacolor pencil. I also cut a hairband from a scrap. Dolly's overskirt was stamped three times from dotty paper (same stack):once for the entire overskirt, once for the three middle sections, and the third time for the center panel. When the overskirt was assembled, the top two layers were sculpted slightly with a large stylus and a foam mat. They were then adhered to the layer below with foam dots toward the bottom and glue on the top edge to create both dimension and movement. Dolly's skin was coloured with Prismacolor pencils and after fussycutting, the edges were outlined with the black Big Brush pen for definition.

Dolly's hair was coloured on that extra head I stamped. After the headband was attached to the original (attached) head and the bangs were coloured, the back part of her hair was fussy cut and adhered over the edges of the headband for a more dimensional look. Once adhered to the page, Dolly and the other elements were outlined with a sketch and wash pencil which I spread and softened with a waterbrush.

Wow! Another marathon post but that's mixed media for you...lots of steps and playing with products. If you managed to stick around through all of the description, you are made of good stuff. Either way, I thank you for visiting and commenting. It's always fun to have friends visit :) Below, you can find links for many of the products I used today from the eclectic Paperie store.

Life is good; so is art.

  1. Fantastic pages, Bonnie. I love how you layered the ink stencilling over the pencilled background, building the separate colour areas. The black accents are so fun and funky - brilliant!

  2. I do like the way you 'gussied' up the doll Bonnie and the colours in the background are just gorgeous and really show off those black embellies so well. Love that wavy stamp too, it is so effective on your lovely pages. Hugs, Anne x
